Offline backups and business data recovery planning
Protect essential business files through an appropriate backup strategy, including genuinely disconnected copies when useful.
A backup matters only when it can be restored
A NAS or network drive makes automation easier but can be affected if compromised credentials allow backups to be altered. The goal is not to declare all network storage unsafe; it is to maintain independent copies and verify that recovery works.
Keep a disconnected copy
A securely encrypted and separately stored external drive may complement regular backups. Write-once DVD-R or BD-R media can help with small, stable archives. A CD-R holds around 700 MB and is usually unsuitable for an entire business dataset.
The strategy covers backup frequency, retention, location and the ability to read the media in future.

Pacta can help identify essential data, organise copies, check their integrity and plan recovery tests. Long-term archives must be distinguished from backups used to restart operations. Acceptable data loss and recovery time guide the technical choices.
Storing a client's media or encryption keys creates additional contractual responsibilities. Customers should retain control of their data and understand each solution's limits. See also preventive maintenance.
